Discovering A Better Way

I am the gate

Is there a better way? I mean, a better way to:

  • accomplish what God gives you to do,
  • be who he calls you to be,
  • and live as he calls you to live?

The answer can be found by taking a walk through a particular gate.

I am the gate;

Whoever enters through me will be saved.

He will come in and go out, and find pasture.

Jesus, John 10:9

Before going any further, let’s define the word ‘gate’. A gate is a point of entry or departure. It allows us to come into a place, to begin something new, to provide access or to leave.

Now, let’s see how this scripture can help you discover a better way to do, be, and live.

  1. I am the gate.

Is there a better way to do what God gives you to do?

God has given you things to do each day. You may be ‘doing’ at the office, with strangers, at home with the kids, at school, with friends, or with an adversary. The challenge is to do that ‘thing that you do’ in a Christ-like way – the better way. It’s doable – but first you must know Christ.

To know someone, means to spend time with him. Learning of him or about him are different than knowing him. Some of us found out in younger years that those we spend time with rub off on us. Let Jesus rub off on you. Hang out with him. Make your time together numero uno. Talk with him. Listen to him. Then, see if you don’t catch his character shining through you and your doing more often.

One more thing about doing…remember that while a gate is a way in, it can also be an exit, an opportunity to go, or to stop something or someone.

Is there something you need to leave or stop so you can do what you’ve been given to do? Maybe you have a habit that needs to be left behind, negative self-talk that must be stopped or an inhibiting fear to lay at the cross. Could be you need to forgive or seek forgiveness before you can accomplish what God calls you to today. Only you know, and only you can make it happen – in better way.

  1. Whoever enters through me will be saved.

Is there a better way for you to be?

Be saved. “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:17) Jesus came to save. Save you from destruction, rescue, and deliver you from evil. Save you for eternity with God and through (not from) the trials, temptations, bumps and bruises of your days.  And save you for something good. Being saved means being set aside for something.  In the kingdom of God, that something is good.

When you walk through your trials, remember the promise – enter and you will be saved.

  1. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.

Is there a better way to live?

You are called to play a role and fulfill a purpose in the completion of God’s plan. Do you know your purpose?

Sometimes we self-define – create our own purpose. When we do that we may find satisfaction – for a while – but we continue to strive and have the ongoing sense that there is still something missing. There is a better way to live and it answers the question, “Why am I here?”

The way is Christ.

There is freedom in knowing Christ created you and calls you to be a particular way…to be uniquely YOU …you don’t have to try to be someone you’re not! In fact, don’t want to be someone else! Be you! You have a part to play in your skin, at this time, and in this place!

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,

before you were born I set you apart;

I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Jeremiah 1:5

These words from God were for Jeremiah, the prophet. They gave Jeremiah direction, hope, and purpose. There is hope, direction, and purpose awaiting you as well. You might not be called to be a prophet (or you might!) but you are definitely called to fulfill a special part in his plan.

Finally, when you think about it, living out your calling is a bit like a sheep living in a pasture. It feeds your soul, refreshes, and nourishes you. You find peace and feel most alive there. It is where God’s presence and protection abounds. Living your purpose brings heaven to earth and God is glorified.

Knowing and living God’s plan and purpose is living… the better way.

Walk Through the Gate

Imagine, standing in green pastures and turning to look back at the gate surrounded on both sides by the hard, rough, rock wall – the one that tears at your flesh, discourages your hope, and scars your soul – and happily knowing without a doubt that walking through the gate as you go about your doing, being, and living is indeed the better way.

Purpose Steps

  1. Do. Commit to knowing Christ more. Intentionally spend more time with him by reading scripture, praying and acknowledging his presence throughout your day.
  2. Be. Thank God each day for Jesus who saves us through trials and for eternity – for our good and his glory.
  1. Live.  Acknowledge your sacred worth and seek to know and live your unique, God-designed purpose.

Purpose Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for Jesus, the gate to my worth, purpose, and salvation. I pray to do, be, and live the better way he has provided. In Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen.
